My NX goes to the dealership to get yet another diagnostic run on it. I have no idea what they are gonna come up with. I have now changed the plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, O2 sensor, and alternator. My car just got 24mpg(mainly hwy) running 89oct chevron gas. When the engine is cold it is very prone to dying when brought from any gear to idle. bad surge and hesitation, very little power.
when driving i hear a loud and constant ticking sound and some squealing every once in a while. and the batt and brake light are still on.
It's a 93 with just under 160k, so im starting to look at maybe getting a new engine. ive seen them as low as 500 bucks for a stock sr20de, how much do det's run?
anyways what do you guys think the verdict will be? Im hoping its not too much $$$, I wanna get a paint job this spring/summer.

When you say changed the alternator, do you mean that it is a new one or just one that is rebuilt? If your brake/battery lights are still coming on then that means your car still thinks there is something wrong with the alternator. And chances are that it is still the alternator since the symptoms you describe relate to having a bad alternator. If you have not done so already, try a different dealership/mechanic. These guys might just happen to be monkeys.

I noticed you're from Washington. If your looking for a used japanese sr20de, there's a place in portland called alpha that'll deliver to your doorstep (or shop) for free. They quoted me 595 for mine. They might be in your phone book or you can email me if you want their number.

Sounds liek a bad alternator to me. Try a new one, and not a rebuilt. Who knows, maybe the monkeys neevr even hooked it up to the diagnostic computer, and just told you its ok. As for your engine question. DE's can be had for about 210 at some places, but you will have to pay shipping. DET's can b had for about 1500, then add in the cost of shipping, and you always wanna check and possibly replace rod bearings in them, im not sure how much that would cost. I guess it would depend if you were gona take it somewhere, or do it yourself. You can find out where to get your new engine, and about the rod bearings on se-r.net

actually when you have your engine apart, they have the #s to match up on your crank and block, call the dealership and they have a chart on what grade bearing you need. whats funny is that a few of our local guys just buy the biggest bearings you can get and it works fine for them. and they put down good power too. I would not do this, but from what I see, it will work. the de, and the bb det both have the same bearings, the gti-r uses (ya, you guessed it) beefier bearings and nissan motorsports sells them.

Thanks guys, I took it to nissan and they told me that the alternator tests just fine. They dont know why the batt and brake lights are still on. the said that my oil tubes under the valve cover are clogged badly and that depending on how long it has been driven in this condition my cams could be screwed. Im thinking new engine time and im checking on the sr20 mentioned in the above post. they said that they suggest a tune up to make sure the timing is set right. and im gonna check into some new plug wires as well.
