take off the knob, and take a saw type deal. If you are putting on a new shift knob then just cut away, because they give you new things in there to tighten it up on the shifter. As for you shiter to be shorter, I dont know. Cut off the top part of the toilet and **** in a pipe! Good luck with the shifter.

You say you feel like you're driving a truck. Is that because the throws are too long or because the shifter is too tall? I ask because I used to think the NX shifter was too tall, but I have realized that it is not. It is actually in the right place. In my miata, the shifter is shorter, but you also sit lower in that car. Compared to my NX, the shifter is actually in about the same position relative to the driver position.

I put a Pacesetter short shifter kit in and the throws are short and it shifts great! I would recommend you do the same.

I had my stock shifter cut about an inch and half about five years ago. After the shop cut it, they rethread the shaft and put the stock shifter know back on. I have had no problems whatsoever, and of course, shifts are slightly quicker.

I'm not endorsing/suggesting this method (legal crap), but for me, at the time, this was a much cheaper alternative to a short shifter kit. I'm glad I did it.

I took a roto zip to mine and cut about two inches off of it, and put a universal shifter knob on it,works fine for now and I like the way it feels alot better.

If you install the Pace Setter Short Throw Shifter (>$100) and set the ball as high as possible you will not only get the shortest throws (I LOVE short throws) but you'll also get a SHORTER shifter. The possible downsides are if you don't like short throws and clearance issues with your cat heat sheild. The heat shield issues are easily resolved. You can bend or cut the shield no sweat.
