who makes a good muffler?

let me explain myself better:

i got bored the other day and decided that since its going to be a while before i can get my money back from the bastard that screwed me, i'd do some cheap ghetto mods to pass the time. it has been bugging me that my cat is the only thing left of my emissions system, so exhaust (ghetto-style) mods seemed the thing to do.

the other day i found a NX2000 in a junkyard thru copartfinder.com that was only like 120 miles from me, so i presumed that if i didn't like what i did, i'd just fix it back with the parts from the junkyard. (i later found this car to be bullshit and to have never existed in the first place, but i'll get there in a second.)

anyways, since i am going to redo the whole thing in 3-inch mandrel when i go turbo. i figured that ghetto style mods would actually be fun. plus i needed to try my new welder out...

i pulled the exhaust from the car and cut off a certain 36" from my exhaust. i went to the local parts store and bought a bunch of cheap exhaust replacement stuff. i welded this stuff inline, and decided to move on to the muffler. my idea was to cut it open and connect the inlet and the outlet pipe directly together. i was going to then punch a few holes or something into this piece and reseal the muffler. (i never go this far, so quit smirking)

i have discovered that i don't think this muffler thing will work. i then went to the junkyard...and guess what: NO NX!!

so anyways, i am now in the market for a new muffler. i would prefer something that is only axle-back and would connect to the pipe where the turbo did or something... can you guys help me find one based on the following criterea in order of importance:

1. will work with turbo exhaust(3")
2. best flowing
3. won't rust (for a while)
4. cheap
5. looks good

it'd also be nice if it didn't make my ears bleed or cops hear me three miles away, but i can deal with that if necessary.

thanks for the help.

If you want to find a muffler with a 3 inch opeing, your best bet will be to go to a auto parts store, and order up a dynomax or something, cuz most exhaust manufacturers go no further than 2.5 inch(i.e. Courtesy). If you want just an axle back, you can order the Courtesy rear section which is just a small piece of pipe that goes over the axle + the mufler. Another suggestion, like i said was order a 3 inch opening Dynomax or another like it and weld her up.

My dynomax super turbo muffler cost a whooping 55 dollars. It flows pretty well, but isn't the best looking muffler in the world. It looks alright though and I've been happy with it so far.

well, i found a aerospeed 2.5" muffler for 40 bucks, and i think i'm going to try it. if it don't work, it's only 40 bucks. my exhaust is finished, minus the muffler. it is amazing what a little JB weld, a oxy-mapp welder and a couple of coke cans can do.

and no. i am not kidding about the ghetto-rigged exhaust. it is a prime example of ghetto-rice-boy engineering. i just hope it lasts until i do the 3" mandrel bent exhaust.

we'll see. i'd prolly go with the dynomax or courtesy, but i am kinda in a hurry to get her running rite now.

does anyone know if putting jbweld on your muffler or exhaust is bad?

well, the graft is complete.

i stuck it all back together and it sounds like a retartded dump truck or something. but it runs, and doesn't leak.

btw, i ended up sticking my stock muffler back on there.

i just cleaned out the inside.

anyways, i let it idle for 45 minutes, during which it smelled like ****, and the joints with the jb weld smoked really bad.

i drove like three miles tonight and it when i got home the smell outside the car was overwhelming and the joints were smoking really bad. this scares me

i'm not as worried about the jb weld coming loose, but i am more worried about it spontaneously combusting and blowing up my car.

the question now is: has anyone used jb weld on thier exhaust and if you have, did your car blow up?

just looking for some piece of mind before i drive the 2.5 hours to ATL.

and one other VERY IMPORTANT question:

how hot does the exhaust pipe get? say around where a certain cat used to be?

i'm sure somebody knows this, and i really need to know what the anwser is. it'll let me know if this **** is going to explode and me die in the process....

Heh.....Hot enough that you don't wanna touch it after driving around more than 10 minutes, lol.
