So I finally stopped this guy in a white 92 NX and we chatted about tune up tricks. One thing he had was a device called a potentiator. It hooks up to the cigarette lighter and it gets power from wire 18 in the ecu. The trick to the thing is that it tricks the car into running more fuel by telling it the wrong temp of the engine. This guy says its good for 6-10HP. When he played with it the idle would go up. Ever heard of this trick?

He also had a switch to retard timing by 25 degrees. He'd hit it and the engine would definitely stumble. But he said it was good for top end runs. Any input on that?

Uh, this guy sounds like a dumbass to me... more fuel does not mean more power. In fact, too much fuel can hurt power. And why would you want to retard the timing, you generally advance it as far as you can without detonating.

I thought it sounded funny.
oh, it was called a potentiameter.
oh, well, when I see him I'll race him and see how bad I lose. Supposedly he got the idea from a Nissan Racing CD. hmmmm......
