I use Mobil 1 10w30 and have noisy valves for a split second right after startup on my BB DET does anyone elses do this? What oil have you found to work the best and how often do you change your oil?

im having the same problem you have also.u have to re-shim the lifters
They are not noisy after startup just when the car first fires up so Im thinking that I could probably change what brand of oil I use and that would probably cure it. I dont think that you have to reshim the valves just for that.

you cannot do this on sr20det or sr20de unless it a gtir motor the rest have hydralic lifters...

id say it your chain tentioner not the lifters if it is only noise on start up.
Im not really concerned with it to much. The engine after startup just sits there and purs. Its just when the engine is cold on startup. I dont think that its the cahin tensioner as I can hear it across the valve cover pretty much. My friend said that his did it but then he switched to Royal Purple oil in his and it doesnt do it anymore?
Well my car still does it but less often now. I bet it is the timing chain tensioner but do I really need to do anything about it? i mean the car runs fine and doesnt have this noisy startup all the time just every now and then.

check and make sure your exhaust is all tight, my exhaust used to make noise at start up cause one of the brackets was loose and the bolt, and washer made noise.

if there all tight then the tensioner is probubly the culpret.

i dont think you need to change it now or your motor will blow up but maby when you get a chance change it, like with a cam install or something.
sorry to bring this from the dead but I have the noise on start up as well the same problem and i use mobil 1 10W30

any solutions.............

Try a 5w30 and a different filter. I was running a 5w30 M1 synth and the Mobil filter.. yes the $10 one. no noise ever. 16deg the other am...

I change to 10w30 M1 synth and the pure one filter..... hello rocker noise.
With similar temps nothing but an oil change.. Im going back at the end of the week.
Did you see the date on this one?
haha...
WOW! I never believed in ghosts, but seeing is believing!!!!
Guess it's the downside of searching, sometimes you forget the threads you're reading can be really old. I regularly almost reply to old threads. Then again... if what you're saying is really useful that just helps build the database.
well idk why no has said this put yea your valves click when theres no oil in them, i think u said it goes away so that means that u prob dont have oil in the lifters yet just wait for the oil to get up there
Aftermarket oil filters have faulty anti-drain valves in them 90% of the time. The only filters I have tested to have consistently good drain valves are: Mobil, AC Delco, and of course all factory filters.

The drain-valve keeps oil inside the filter when the engine is turned off so the engine does not have a dry start. Try using the factory filter, that seems to work well for fixing the noise. But it is a hydraulic valvetrain and it takes a sec to pressurize the oil, but the new filter should help a lot. Hope this helps you guys out.
