would timing advance procedure be any different on a 2000 sr20de than the previous year? anything i should know before i do this? (other than use a timing gun and 92+ octane)
Not that I know of. Should be the same thing. Always when advancing my timing I will take a ride with the windows up and radio off with hard 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear pulls form 1500RPM on up to listen for detonation. FWIW I've never heard any

Hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but what DOES detonation sound like? I too am looking to bump up the timing on my SR20DE, and want to know what to listen for.
The best desription I have heard is percolating (sp?) (kind of like a coffee machine getting started)
I had my timing at 18 degrees with the S3 cams and I could here detonation when starting from a standstill (1400 rpm while letting the clutch out, light acceleration). Its now at 16 degrees.
