Me and my step dad were thinking and I was like I am probably gonna buy a CAI. He said get outa here...he said let's try and do a ram intake. He said we'll cut out a piece of the hood, put in a scoop and run tubing from it. He is not an amatuer either. He is handy like that...

So I'll let you know how it goes. It should be a nice power increase though...

You can find Impreza type Hood scoops at HTTP://Roadraceengineering.com But it all depends on what style you are looking for. I dont suggest any of the scoops you find in Jegs mags those look tacky, My personal opinion is I like the Oval like Half circle that flows like a cone type hood scoops. IMHO

I hate to break the news to you but you will seriously scramble your MAF if you do a ram air set up on your car.

BTW, I am not going to say who this is cause I think I we are cool so I don't want to mess this up but I kind of found it amusing considering he has gobs more mods now than before. You figure out who this is:

Just got JWT intake yesterday...my car sounds like a beast now, with the
stillen exhaust it sounds like a powerful V8. >

Well that may be a bit of an exaggeration. It doens't sound like a V8. I
think my friend who owns a '97 Trans Am Ram-Air once said it best when I
revved my engine with the PR CAI "it sounds like a supercharged weedwacker."

Why not make some sort of ram air intake that has air enter through the bottom of your bumper it's alot easier to work on as opposed to cutting a hole in the hood. Besides I would be a bit worried about water getting in my engine when it rains. If you were to put it on, or under the bumper you could still use an AEM bypass right?

Alright, what will happen with the MAF???

ok so far, here's what we did:

-I bought a square K&N filer, fiberglass kit, and bondo.
-we molded a design for the scoops and the new intake box for the square filer.
-molded them with the fiberglass
-made the scoops nice by finishing them with fiberglass reinforced bondo. it also added strength.
-we are almost at the finishing stages for the scoops as we have about 5 layers of fiberglass and equal bondo. they are about to to be sanded and painted.
-the box was just molded today and it needs about 2 more layers of fiberglass.
-then we cut holes in the hood, mount scoops, and hook up new intake box with a tube from the scoops leading to it.

It is pretty tricky but fun. I'll keep updating.

alot of impreza guys take out their heat extractors from their hoods and use an open air filter w/o any problems, unless you are getting all of your air from the scoop, and do not get stuck in a downpour, with no way out, I would not worry about it. a little rain never hurt, just a little water injection

What will happen is you will probaly end up running pig rich. You are pushing air into your intake pipe even when it doesnt need it. MAF sees more air, sends more gas, no air going in since you arent on the pedle(or more air is in the pipe than is being used. So you will get lots of gas, for a normal ammount of air. What will end up happening is while you are on the highway(only place ram air works) and you push in the clutch to up or down shift your car will sputter and die. It has happened many times before to others that have done similar things or ram air type things. What one guy was doing was running a scoop with round duckting up to the filter and that was enough to screw up the correct signal to the ECU. Believe us, it doesnt work....

alright...It is taking a lot longer than I thought. My step dad wants it to look nice...

So is there anyway around the running rich thing? If it doesn't work, then I guess I'll just put the pop charger back on and it will at least give it a feed of cooler air.

I really want the ram set-up though...I thought the MAF can withstand 200+ horses???

Well if anyone can help with the tuning part then let me know.

I didn't realize I was gonna have to bondo..sand...bondo...sand...over and over.

So right now it is smooth and I just have to fill in small pit-holes. The box is almost done too...it turned out better than we though...

Ok, good looking out for him Bowlcut. What he is saying has happened to me. I have a CAI and thought I might gain some power by taking my foglight out at the track. All that happened is et's got higher, mph got lower and the car would shut off after each run when I sunk the clutch. The car is getting into a super rich condition which causes it to shut off. At wide open throttle the car will seem fine. It is at anywhere else in the rpm where the car will run lean/rich. Definately go with the cold air intake. At least you'll have a sweet looking hoodscoop when you are done. Hope this helps..........
