Another installment of problems with my 92 classic I got for cheap

So here I am listening to the speedo make a really loud clacking past 15 mph

I looked on the FAQ and someone said if you push the cable towards the speedo it will eliminate the clack, along with cutting all the cable ties to the speedo.

So I went in there, pushed the cable a bit and BAM

I think the whole speedo - pinion assembly came out of the tranny

of course my speedo and odo were dead.

My question is, was the clacking in the speedo from the loose pinion assembly (I dont think it should have pulled out that easy) or is it a bad speedo cable?

What do I need to replace!!

Oh yeah, the car leaked a bit of tranny fluid, my guess would be because the pinion came out.

WHAT DO I DO
AHHH

First try replacing your cable. Chances are that the pin going into your speedo was wearing down. If you look at it, is square. That clicking you heard is most likely the sound of that pin stripping in the speedo, like turning a stripped nut in a wrench. This same thing just happened to me. I ordered the cable from Courtesy for about 26 bucks. Hint: When installing it, hook it up to the speedo first, then the tranny. If you do it the other way around, you wont have enough slack in the cable once its on the tranny to put it onto the speedo. Hope I made sense.

I finally pulled the cable out from the tranny and I got a perfectly square unit,

Should the cable have come out that easy?
