I went to start my car today and all I got was a high pitched spinning sound, kinda like the starter was spinning but not in contact with anything. It's not the high pitched scream you get when you have a chipped flywheel or the clicking you get with a seized starter. It sounds like the starter spins fine but the engine doesn't fire. It doesn't even sound like the engine is trying to turn over. Anybody got any idea?

Well squeel is normal...but not in this situation. Sounds like you have a bum starter. Sounds like the gear isnt coming out of its housing. So problay time to bite the bullet and buy a new one....in the excess of 100+ if i remember correctly. not that hard to remove tho.

Lay under car look up on the back side of engine and unplug the starter, after you have disconnected the battery. Remove all intake stuff then you should see two bolts holding the starter to the tranny. Unbolt them have someone remove the starter from below or it will fall. Take it to Advanced or AutoZone....any of those they test starters last time I checked. Then they will tell you you need a new one probaly. Reverse the steps, read some more on it and get like a hanes or something similar its not that hard to do. Just a big hit in the wallet.

Get a big stick or something and whack the starter a few times and then try to start it again. Probably your starter is starting to crap out on you, banging on it will loosen things up a bit and make it sort of livable until you can put a new one in.
