Hey, gang--

I finally got around to test-fitting the new piping for my air-water intercooler setup. Thanks to Jamie Landry at www.powertechimports.com the test-fitting process was quite, quite easy.

Jamie sent me a big box with just about every silicone fitting made under the sun, some aluminum pipe bends, and my Greddy Type RS BOV (the recirc flange is on its way, soon).

Here's the loose-fitting mock-up of the pipes I did last night.

Out of the throttle body we go to an aluminum 2.5" pipe with the Greddy Type RS BOV on it. It will be recirc'd...just don't have the fitting yet. That pipe makes a slight 45* bend to a silicone coupler that makes another slight 45* bend, into the air-water IC core.

From the air-water IC, a Powertech Imports 90* silicone bend (all this is 2.5", btw) turns down toward a short piece of aluminum pipe. That is connected to a Powertech Imports 45* silicone bend, to make a very gradual transition to the 2.5" aluminum pipe coming out of the compressor on the bottom side of the turbo.

Adding that gradual 45* bend enables me to use this FMAX 3" MAF-to-turbo pipe. It gives me just enough room to slide the Z32 MAF and JWT Pop filter down in there.

After sanding and painting of the aluminum pipes (and the MAF-to-turbo pipe), I'll install this in a more tight-fitting fashion and make sure everything fits well with no interference.

In order to keep the air-water IC core under the hood...this was the best route and combination of silicone/aluminum I could come up with.

Let me know what you guys think. I'm always open to suggestions.

Will, the blue 90* and 45* couplers will all remain where they are. The trick was using them to make the funky bend that goes from compressor outlet to the inlet of the air-water core. I'd hate to do it with all aluminum, as I cannot TIG weld nor have access to a TIG.

A lot of the UK GTi-R guys have been doing all-silicone IC pipe setups for a few years, with good results. The only aluminum pipes are the short ones -- the one out of the TB with the RS flange on it, and the one that joins the 90* and 45* silicone bends together.

I got the air-water setup from forum member Denske (Dennis). It was on Jonathon Schultz's old B13 before that. It has a 500gph marine pump to move the coolant, a 1-gallon JAZ fuel cell to hold the coolant (mounted in the trunk)...and I will add a transmission cooler in the bumper to cool the water-antifreeze mix for every day driving.

At the track, it will get 1 gallon of icy water. :)

I would get one of the coolers that come with prefit fans, that way in stop and go, it will be nice and cool when you finally get to take off...

Wait, do you guys have traffic there? :D

Steve--
We do have traffic here. Mainly large 4x4s with many people in them, and they look as if they have to be somewhere in a hurry to apply an a$$ whooping to somebody/something.

Corey--
If you look at silicone bend prices...you'll see that for a setup like this, the price is comparable to making your own pipes out of steel. My air-water pipes are about 4' total in length, and I am using a total of 3 silicone bends. About $150 total.

And just so I don't look like a fool....the air-water setup came from Jonathon Thompson's B13. My apologies to him....long week, no brain.

Nice thing about using more silicone here in CA is if you get black, it looks more stock. Combine this with a T25 or T28 setup, and you could get your hood popped and the cop would never be the wiser...
