I felt like being a newbie, and asking this so i can get an exact answer
i see struts and shocks all the time, now to my knowledge(very limited) they should be the exact same thing... right?
well i saw a couple of pictures and the strut one didnt have this little cup thing where the spring settles in like the picture of the shock did.... now does this mean if i get G/C coilovers i should get the strut without that peice so the bottom of the peice fits on the strut? or do i get the shock with the cup thing on the bottom and the bottom peice of the coilover fit in there? im very confused about this... might be a stupid question but everyone starts somewhere lol

If you buy GC's, just buy what they recommend for your car - you will end up cutting off some of the spring perch (the "cup") to use the GC's. Although I think you don't have to in some cases, it just looks cooler ;)
struts are just a shock (basically) surrounded by the spring. macpherson struts is a suspension set-up for the front of a vehicle, while theres another name for a strut set-up on the rear (se-r.net might have this, or here). anyways, they do the same thing, which is keep the springs from bouncing forever. so, that picture you saw of the shock with the spring perch and the strut without it...don't understand that.
hopefully someone else will chime in with better info (i hope mine is ok)

The little "cup" is the spring perch.

You won't be able to get a strut with out the spring perch for your NX.

This should help.
These are my front AGX's with GC coilover kit prior to installation.
BTW, the piece on the top is the Cusco camber plate.

Here are the rears.
And the piece on top of these are the ShigSpeed pillow ball mounts.

As you can see the spring perch remains in both front and rear struts.

And for the record, struts are different from shocks.

As no-one actually answered your question....here goes

A strut locates the hub, as in controls the alignment, as well as damping the spring.

A shock just damps the spring, it doesn't have any effect on the geometry of the suspension...
