timing chain on gtir?

Ok so i was just putting cams into my gtir and the cahine dropped down into the motor i got it back out no problem. The car is back together and running but it hesitates at like 2500 to 3000 rpm and i have to stomp it to get it to clear up. i took the valve cover off and re-checked the timing on the cams and the marks on the chain and cams are spot on. i am using stock cams gears so there is no way it could have moved. What i am wondering is can the chain come off the crank sprocket and jump a tooth that way? i thought it had a guard so it couldnt but im not sure and how do i check if it did? is there anyway to check it without taking the oil pump cover off?
