Question about timing. When timing the engine what should I be lining the needle up with on the pully? I have it set on the two dots that are closest together right now at 15 degrees like it says it should be at. Cuz there are other dots to the left and like one or two to the right of the two dots closest together. Cuz right now I notice the valves making noise when I let off the gas to shift. So that gets me thinkin about the timing and if i have it right?! Any light on the situation would be great! thanx!

Your valves wll never clatter unless the shims get spit out or they're hitting the pistons.

You might be hearing the timing chain (check the tensioner). It's not detonation because the throttle is closed and there's nowhere near enough cylinder pressure to get into that regime.
