Of the three underhood squeals I've been systematically eliminating over the past two weeks, the most disturbing remains. It is not the belts, but sounds like a dry furniture caster. Strange thing is, it sounds more like it's coming from inside the head than from the most-likely suspect, the water pump.

Problem is, the last time I used the stethescope with a stick, the rattle-type squeal was transmitted so well through all the metal, it sounded just as loud at the alternator as it did at the water pump. It's everywhere I touch with the probe!

So, how do I isolate it? Or are there bad things happening inside my head. Oh, that sounds bad, doesn't it?

Another look & listen last night isolated it to the PS pump. Light touch with the stethescope let the squeal in underneath the general noises of an otherwise well-behaved engine. Now I'm off to search on PS pump costs & replacements.
