I have a S14 Silvia (200SX 1995) and I want to upgrade the Turbo without going crazy. The choices I am looking at are
Standard S15 Turbo
Standard R34 GTR Skyline Turbo
Garrett GT2530
Garrett GT28RS
How do the two standard Turbo's rate against the two new Garrett ones. By the way my engine is a SR20 DET Variable Cam Timing. It's out getting a rebuilt with forged pistons and a full balance.

Depends on how much power you want to make... 250-300whp, the GT28R (same as S15 Spec R) will get you there.. Also the Pulsar GTI-R (Non ballbearing) will get you there a little cheaper. The 2530, I have no experience with... The GT28RS, will get you to 340whp or so if you keep the internal wastegate. If you TIG weld a wastegate flange to run a 38mm Tial gate, you can make closer to 370-380whp most likely. The cool thing that I've done, is use the Garrett GT25R/GT2540R. This has been called a "mismatch" turbo, because the turbine/compressor wheels don't match in terms of size/speedlines.. However, I have done my own work with this turbo, and it CAN make 400whp at 20psi of boost. You will have to TIG weld a flange to run an external wastegate, but this will allow better flow, and you can make bigger numbers. And honestly, the lag isn't that bad.. It's compareable to a 50 trim/stage I T3/T04E.. but more reliable and faster transient time. Here's what you can expect to pay..

GT28 (S15)- 680.00-780.00
GT28RS- 1000.00-1200.00
GT25R/GT2540R- 1000.00-1200.00
T28 (Pulsar)- 595.00-650.00
