well if there is no intercooler you could have a u13. the u12's came with top mounts the u13's didnt i believe. and the gtir is quad throttle bodied..and well the best way to tell the differnce is run numbers 
what's the difference in DET engines?
actually my question is, how do i tell the difference between u12, u13 and gti-r DET engines? i know the gti-r has a big top mount but if there is no intercooler how do you tell. i think they all have a red valve cover? or not i'm not sure. i've searched for this info because i thought i've read about this before but i can't find it again.

U12 - red top, should have top mount small intercooler
U13 - front mount intercooler, so the turbo may or may not be turned like the avenir, not sure
W10 - black top, front mount intercooler
W11 - silver top, front mount intercooler, with ball-bearing T25 turbo
GTiR - red top, quad throttle bodies, large top mount IC, T28 turbo etc.

ok, thanks, i'm going to look at a DET engine tomorrow and hopefully buying it! i was told it had a red valve cover but nothing about an intercooler. just wanted to get some idea of what i'm looking at so i don't look like a complete idiot...thanks again.

If the turbo outlet faces the front of the car and it has a red VC then its a U13.
in terms of bottom end strength what the diffrence ?

GTiR is a little stronger, but parts are a kinda hard to find here state side.

does that get in the way of fans or anything, compared to a U12 w/ the turbo pointing up.

thanks for the offer jimmy but i went and picked it up last night. it looks ok, i was kinda picking at it today at work. i'm running into some issues i need to figure out.
