Stalling at start-up

When I first start my car, it tries to stall unless I give it a little gas, then the idle evens out and it runs fine. But then if I push the car, say like flying down the freeway, then come the exit, sometimes it stalls right after I engage the clutch. But thats not all the time. The car has run kind of rough since the engine swap, but I never really thought anything of it. Now I'm realizing something just isn't right. My car shouldn't be stalling. I'm thinking maybe my spark plugs, they're about a year and a half old, but have maybe 15,000 miles on them tops. The wires have maybe 25,000 on them, but are about 2-2 1/2 years old. If you're wondering why the low milage on the parts, my car has a bad habit of breaking for 6-8 month stints. My mods are in my signiture, does anybody have a direction for me to look first? After it settles down, the idle is around 1000 or so.

stock usdm ecu.

The most likely thing is the base idle speed. If it is off the engine will stall until the idle air motor catches up to what is happening. Make sure you lock the timing before you set the idle speed and I don't recommend setting it from the car's tach either.

i had the same problem. i would slow down and it would just die. didnt happen all the time though. it would idle rough and after about 15-20 seconds it would die. check your mass air flow sensor. my sensor was bad. after i got a new one it idled fine.

Yea, mine is doing this as well...it'll sometimes die at startup and I need to press the gas ad I turn the key, or it'll sometimes die when I push in the clutch. Part of the problem, I think, is my cams, etc. But it's become more of a problem since I've installed my JWT ECU and then again with the installation of the Fidanza Flywheel.

Raising my idle has helped but it's not the base of the problem. For some reason, the RPMs dive down significantly when I push in my clutch and let off the gas, then it compensates and it lurches back up to normal. At an 800RPM idle, it may dive down to 200RPM and then stall out, at a 1100RPM idle, it dives down to about 500rpm and back up. I can't figure it out, but I'm prolly going to check my IACV.

I put my header on today in it seems to do it more so now than before. Ninety-Nine SE-L, that is EXACTLY what mine does. The IAVC is the sensor on the pass side of the intake correct?

yea, assuming you have a low port like me, it's on the pass side and it's bolted to the upper part of the intake manifold.

you can see it best in this pic:

it's opposite to the TB. You can see that the upper one has the IACV but no TB, the lower one has the TB but no IACV.

Nah, I have a high port, but I see what it is, I'll give the dealer a call monday and get a price and change it anyway, can't hurt to change it.

ive seen this alot on here, and i have the exact same problem. bassicly everything stock (electronics, and ecu). but my car will stall out by itself at startup sometimes, as well as when comming to a stop at lights and whatnot. The only noticible thing i have is the s5's that might cause some kinda issue. im starting to belive its somthing electronic, involving spark or the distributer.

Clean your throttle body. It is probally gunked up as hell. Use a toothbrush and a rag. Take off the hose leading to the IAVC vaccum so you do not get T/B cleaner in it.

And I thought this was very rare. Same thing happens to me. I notice it more when I drive and stop and then come back out to my car and start it back up, and just stalls on me. I've also had it happen when sitting in traffic, if I go up to like 5k rpms and let off the gas, it will stall. Happened about twice in a month (not very common) but I was told that this is normal in turbo cars, plus I have 555 cc injectors, but no matter turbo or non-turbo, seems to do this to all cars.

The weird part is that I have an Auto!!! One time it happened, when I was kept the car in 2nd and went up to 6k rmps and let go of the gas and just stalled. But when I'm driving I noticed that it only happens (both times) when I was turning.

Im bumping this up because I have the same problem and cant figure it out. Its done it ever since I went turbo. Its the same motor. New plugs, fuel filter, dist cap & rotor, wires OEM, usdm ecu, safc2...

This has been happening to me too. Especially when it is hot out or the engine is fully warmed up. I think I may check my fuel pressure today at work. I guess it would give me an excuse to buy a walbro and a fpr. :)

Clean your throttle body and reverse flush with the red straw, that little hose under the T/B that leads to the IACV solenoid. And a bottle of water remover. That usually helps me.

BUMP thread. (Did a search and this had the most results).

Recently my '95 B14 has been stalling on cold start-up only. If I press the gas lightly for 2 seconds or so it's fine, but with key only it starts and revs up to 1500 or so then falls down the 0 and stalls. Any suggestions??

Had the same problem with my brother s de and ve. Check to make sure all the vacuum lines are connected and not dry rotted. Another thing is to make sure the maf has a good ground. These cars really benefit from a proper grounding system.
