Hey, gang--

Just wanted to share the pics from the B14 and B15 beam-bending party held today at my house in WV. Attending were Eric96SER (Eric), Ben92SentraSE-R (Ben the evil overlord), 98SR20VE (Steve, the beam master), jacen99se (Jason), Saaby (who is just Saaby. Saaby don't sit.) And Eric's friend Rick, who had a new Spec V to be bent.
Here's the pics, with captions...

Image

The peanut gallery watches on as Steve bends the beam on Jason's '99 SE-L. Note that Ben does nothing.

Image

Steve (98SR20VE) relaxes while Jason falls over in horror at just how dirty his car really is. Plans are underway to wash the SE-L this summer.

Image

Rick's gorgeous Spec V became the first B15 chassis to have its rear beam bent by Steve. Operation successful. Eric points out all the sockets he can steal from me and Steve while this goes on.

Image

Eric96ser's B14 goes under the beam, so to speak, while the peanut gallery watches on. Note Ben's legs do nothing. Note the pretty turbo Classic and Lightning in the background. Only the ghetto plumbing van keeps this from being a very nice photograph.

Image

All the monkeys and their cars, in a row. From left to right: Jason (jacen99se), Rick (not on forum, with Spec V), Yours Truly and his gorgeous Classic behind him, Ben (Ben92SentraSE-R) and his new Maxima (traitor), Steve (98SR20VE) and his green '98 SE with the SR20VE engine in it, Eric (eric96ser) and his '96 SE-R behind him, and Saaby (just Saaby. Like Madonna. One name.) and his '99 red SE-L behind him.
My wife Jennifer shot the photo for us, just before everybody split up and went their separate ways. Except for Ben, who decided to come back to my house and do nothing.

And there you have it. In all, Steve (98SR20VE) bent 4 rear beam axles today, giving the B14 and B15 monkeys better suspension geometry for autocrossing and road course duty. Several "test runs" verified the fact that Steve does a magnificent job at this. He is the only person to offer this on the east coast, and it is highly recommended by those that had theirs done today.

My thanks to all the guys for coming to my house and having fun.

Nice work. I wish I could have made it. Maybe plan another one in the future.

On the pic with the cars and owners is a row, who is who, from left to right.

What, again? I've already washed it once this year. If I do it again, won't that put too much wear and tear on the paint?

I'm leaving for an autocross, but I'll report back when its finished.

ps. I want a VE...

I wish I could report on the autocross with the freshly bent beam, but I got sick this morning and can't go. Kinda sucks that I spent last night getting the car ready...

We got home around 10:30. We were able to keep a 85-90mph speed, so going home was better than coming up there. My car is so nasty after driving through Kentucky at night. I can hardly see out of my windshield because of the bugs. At one point, we were on an off ramp in Lexington, and I see Rick jump to the right, then shoot to the left. I radioed to him asking what he was doing. He said, "Gotta try out the new suspension."

After 5 hrs of a little over 4,000rpm, I need a new exhaust. :( I had a blast. I was great getting to meet Steve, just Saaby ;),and Greg's wife. I was also great to see Ben, Jason, and Greg again. Many thanks to the Perrys for allowing the lincoln log suspenion crew to invade their house. You need to admit it Greg, you painted the NX the glittery paint job. I saw that paint gun. ;)

Now that I am feeling a little more coherent I will say some more. This was a really fun weekend. I got to meet a lot of nice people from the forum and was so impressed with how everything went. It just reinforces to me why I like this forum so much. Thanks the Perry’s for letting a group of car guys invade their home. Thanks to all the guys who “got bent” for letting me bend their cars. Thank God for keeping everyone safe and giving us good weather.
Enough with all that…… It was fun getting rides in Greg’s car. Torque is cool :) . It was fun giving rides in the VE car. I think I have Ben’s nail prints in my dash from slowing down so fast in behind another slow moving car :) (Wilwoods rule). West Virginia is a really nice place and Greg is blessed with a lot of friends out there. The convention should be a lot of fun.

Steve, will you consider a trip to Cincinnati in the comming months if there is enough interest? I know of a handful of b14/b15 here

Nice work.

So how much time on average does it take to dismantle the beam down so you can bend it? I'm thinking over this Winter I might yank it off and ship it out to you if your still doing this then.....
If it has a Stllen or a Progress Rear Bar those have to me removed. Other then that it takes about 1 hour per car.

You are 12 hours away from me. That is a awful long trip. I am going to be re-thinking my beam bending trips. I have not decided how I will handle the future trips. If you think you have a group talk to your friends. I taught Eric how to do the procedure. I may let him use my stuff or sell him a Jig. I am thinking about that. I am also not sure if he is even comfortable doing it. I have said it before but it is worth saying again. I could give you all my tools and spend 5 minutes explaining how to do the job and the vast majority would not want to do this job. Some many things to consider. Its very safe done properly. Get an idea how many you have that want the process done. That is step one.

Is there a thread on EXACTLY how the BEAM is bent? Im so curious.
Any before and after pics of the beam?
The short version is this.

1 Make a jig that allows you to put 2000lbs worth of pressure to the center of the beam and not crush it.
2 Attach jig to beam
3 Using chains attach I Beam to beam.
4 Apply just the right amount of pressure to bend the beam to what owner wanted.

Thats about it. It only moves 1/4 inch at the most (depending on what it started with as far as toe is concerned. The beam looks the same afterward. If you sight down the beam you will see a slight bow shape after it is done. The trick is knowing how much force to apply. You actually get a feel for it once you have done it several times. Not to brag but I got all the beams to 1/32nd of an inch of toe in that day (that is what everyone wanted).

This was the most I've enjoyed myself at any meet, mainly because I got to sit around and do nothing! :) After all the 16 hour engine swap days at my place, this was a hardcore vacation for me to sit in that chair and have to worry about nothing going on. Thanks so much to Greg and Jennifer for letting me stay two nights with them.

Alright. I lied about doing absolutely nothing. I did actually get up and worked on one of the headlights on my Maxima. But leisurely-like and not being something that renders the car undrivable :)

Oh, and btw, VEs kickass :) Once the cams kick in it feels EXACLTLY like a stock DET, except for that woosh sound :D
